We had the pleasure of sitting down with Rokk, the dynamic vocalist of XSKULL8, to discuss their journey, creative inspirations, and their latest EP, “When The New Day Comes.” In this interview, Rokk shares the band’s unique story, their approach to balancing raw emotion with polished sound, and a glimpse into what’s coming next for the group. - Hi Rokk and welcome to Heavyworlds. I’m Pinka, and it’s a pleasure to have you here. How are you doing?
Hi there, Pinka! I’m Rokk, the singer of the band. Nice to meet you, and thank you for your interest in our band. We’re doing great—working on some projects for 2025. I think this will be both a scary and an awesome year in terms of the band’s development.
- For those who are discovering XSKULL8 for the first time, how would you introduce yourselves? What’s the essence of your band?
Well… it’s always hard for me to describe ourselves. I’d say we’re that one band the ’90s kids would find familiar, while younger people would see us as modern. We combine raw vibes and meaningful lyrics with modern sound and production.
- The name “XSKULL8” is intriguing. What’s the story behind it, and how does it reflect your music?
It’s from my back tattoo! 😀 Hahaha. It’s a skull with the number 8 carved into the forehead and two red stripes across it. So, the logo was already here, and the name was right in front of us. In 2020, we decided we needed to change the name from Captain Morgan’s Revenge, and since our music had escalated, it felt only right that the name should, too. So… Escalate became XSKULL8.
- Your new EP, “When The New Day Comes,” was written during a period of isolation and reflection. Do you feel this changed your approach to making music? If so, how?
I mean… of course. Every day we live, every song we write, we learn something new. After this EP, we realized we needed to lose the brakes and just give it our all. If the song needs screams—show them hell. If the song needs to be told—tell your story in a way everyone can feel it. I think the whole process evolved us, and we stopped holding back.
- “When The New Day Comes” seems to explore the balance between light and darkness. What was the brightest moment and the darkest one during the creation of this EP?
Huh… the darkest moment? Probably because every day felt the same… nothing. Every day, we lived in fear of what the government would think of next. I think the brightest moment was when I decided to turn off the media and just stopped giving a f***. That was the moment the growth began.
- Was there a song on the EP that initially felt “impossible” to complete? How did you overcome that challenge?
No, I don’t think so—at least I don’t remember it that way. Some songs came together instantly, and for others, we needed to have “more fun” with them. But I always enjoy the process, even if it seems frustrating at the time.
- “Leaves Are Falling Pt. 2” carries a melancholic and reflective atmosphere. How do you transform an abstract emotion into something so tangible and sonic?
I don’t know. Hahaha. It’s just there—it just comes naturally. We don’t have a specific recipe for songwriting. Every song is different, and each needs its own approach. We don’t overthink it. If it sounds right, it’s right.
- The track “When The New Day Comes (Undressed)” lays bare the heart of the title track. How difficult is it to strip your music down to such an intimate level? How did the band react to this decision?
We’ve already made a couple of “undressed” versions of our songs, and this one just felt like it needed that intimate yet “majestic” treatment. It’s not that hard. We don’t force it on the song. If it works from the start, it works.
- Your ability to balance moments of anger and introspection is striking. Do you think this duality reflects the band’s personality or more your individual life experiences?
It’s more individual. Our songs are mostly personal. Every song is a story, and when I write, I interpret the feelings I have in the moment. One word can trigger a positive emotion, another a negative one, and I just let the flow take over.
- What’s the next big step for XSKULL8 after this EP? Are there plans for a full album, more tours, or something unexpected?
The new album is already mastered, and we’re always working on new songs. There’s no stopping us. The plan is to have so much material ready that we could release a new album at any moment. We don’t write songs because we lack material; we write because we love the process. We’re talking about a short tour in the EU area in the spring, but that still needs to be confirmed. Also, we’re working on a major project, but that has to stay a secret for now. Hopefully, you’ll hear about it soon. 😊
- Is there anything you would like to add for your European fans? Thank you so much for your time.
I’d really like to thank each person who has helped us in any way. Ciao Pinka! Sono Rokk, il cantante della band. Piacere di conoscerti e grazie per l’interesse verso la nostra band. Stiamo alla grande lavorando su alcuni progetti per il 2025. Penso che sarà un anno spaventoso e incredibile allo stesso tempo per lo sviluppo della band.
- Per chi scopre gli XSKULL8 per la prima volta, come vi presentereste? Qual è l’essenza della vostra band?
Beh… è sempre difficile descriverci. Direi che siamo quella band che i ragazzi degli anni ’90 troverebbero familiare, mentre i più giovani ci vedrebbero come moderni. Combiniamo vibrazioni grezze e testi significativi con un sound e una produzione moderni.
- Il nome “XSKULL8” è intrigante. Qual è la storia dietro di esso e come riflette la vostra musica?
È preso dal mio tatuaggio sulla schiena! 😀 Hahaha. È un teschio con il numero 8 inciso sulla fronte e due strisce rosse sopra. Quindi, il logo era già lì, e il nome era proprio davanti a noi. Nel 2020, abbiamo deciso di cambiare nome da Captain Morgan’s Revenge e, dato che la nostra musica era evoluta, ci sembrava giusto che anche il nome lo fosse. Quindi… “Escalate” è diventato XSKULL8.
- Il vostro nuovo EP, When The New Day Comes, è stato scritto in un periodo di isolamento e riflessione. Pensate che ciò abbia cambiato il vostro approccio alla creazione musicale?
Ovviamente. Ogni giorno che viviamo, ogni canzone che scriviamo, impariamo qualcosa di nuovo. Dopo questo EP, abbiamo capito che dovevamo lasciarci andare completamente. Se una canzone richiede urla, mostriamo l’inferno. Se una canzone deve essere raccontata, raccontiamo la nostra storia in modo che tutti possano sentirla. Penso che l’intero processo ci abbia fatto evolvere e smettere di trattenerci.
- “When The New Day Comes” sembra esplorare l’equilibrio tra luce e oscurità. Qual è stato il momento più luminoso e quello più oscuro durante la creazione dell’EP?
Il momento più oscuro? Probabilmente il fatto che ogni giorno sembrava lo stesso… niente. Vivevamo ogni giorno con la paura di cosa avrebbe deciso il governo. Penso che il momento più luminoso sia stato quando ho deciso di spegnere i media e smettere di preoccuparmi. Da quel momento è iniziata la crescita.
- C’è stata una canzone nell’EP che inizialmente sembrava “impossibile” da completare? Come avete superato questa sfida?
No, non direi, almeno non la ricordo così. Alcune canzoni sono nate istantaneamente, per altre abbiamo dovuto divertirci di più. Ma mi godo sempre il processo, anche se a volte sembra frustrante.
- “Leaves Are Falling Pt. 2” ha un’atmosfera malinconica e riflessiva. Come trasformate un’emozione astratta in qualcosa di così tangibile e sonoro?
Non lo so. Hahaha. È semplicemente lì, viene naturale. Non abbiamo una ricetta specifica per scrivere canzoni. Ogni canzone è diversa e richiede un approccio unico. Non ci pensiamo troppo. Se suona bene, è giusto così.
- La traccia “When The New Day Comes (Undressed)” rivela l’essenza del brano principale. Quanto è difficile spogliare la vostra musica fino a un livello così intimo? Come ha reagito la band a questa decisione?
Abbiamo già realizzato un paio di versioni “undressed” delle nostre canzoni, e questa sembrava necessitare di quel trattamento intimo ma “maestoso.” Non è così difficile. Non lo forziamo sulla canzone. Se funziona dall’inizio, va bene così.
- La vostra capacità di bilanciare momenti di rabbia e introspezione è notevole. Pensate che questa dualità rifletta la personalità della band o più le vostre esperienze individuali?
Più esperienze individuali. Le nostre canzoni sono per lo più personali. Ogni canzone è una storia, e quando scrivo, interpreto i sentimenti che provo in quel momento. Una parola può scatenare un’emozione positiva, un’altra una negativa, e lascio che il flusso mi guidi.
- Qual è il prossimo grande passo per gli XSKULL8 dopo questo EP? Ci sono piani per un album completo, più tour o qualcosa di inaspettato?
Il nuovo album è già masterizzato e stiamo sempre lavorando a nuove canzoni. Non ci fermiamo mai. Il piano è avere così tanto materiale pronto da poter pubblicare un nuovo album in qualsiasi momento. Scriviamo non perché ci manchi materiale, ma perché amiamo il processo. Stiamo parlando di un breve tour in Europa in primavera, ma deve ancora essere confermato. Inoltre, stiamo lavorando a un grande progetto, ma per ora deve rimanere segreto. Speriamo che ne sentirai presto parlare.
- C’è qualcosa che volete aggiungere per i vostri fan europei? Grazie mille per il vostro tempo.
Vorrei davvero ringraziare ogni persona che ci ha aiutato in qualsiasi modo.
