Serbia’s rock and metal scene continues to thrive. With their latest album “Electrified“, they’ve pushed the boundaries of melodic rock, blending powerful riffs, emotive vocals, and a touch of Balkan flair. In this interview with Heavyworlds, we sit down with Srdjan Brankovic to discuss the creative process behind “Electrified“, the thrill of live performances and the influences that shaped their music. From collaborations with rock legends to adapting to an ever-evolving industry, The Big Deal offers a candid look into their journey and what’s next for the band.

- Hi guys and welcome to Heavyworlds, I’m Pinka and it’s a pleasure to have you here. How are you doing?
Thank you! I’m great. Thanks for your interest! - Collaborating with Anders Wikstrom and Jona Tee brought fresh perspectives to “Electrified”. How did their involvement shape the album and what was the most surprising thing you learned from working with them?
It’s great to have guys like that on the album. I’m a big fan of the bands they both come from, “Treat” and “H.E.A.T.” – in general, I think that the Swedish rock scene is currently the strongest on the planet. Anders wrote and composed the song “Survivor”, and Jona wrote the song “Don’t talk about love” together with Alessandro Del Vecchio. - What inspired the choice of “Electrified” as the album title? Does it reflect a central idea or mood for the record?
That was my proposal at the very end, when everything was over. Everyone in the band really liked the song “Like a Fire”. The lyrics of song are about a metal band that starts performing on stage. About the feeling we all have when we plug in the instruments and our adrenaline starts to burn like fire. When we are on stage, connected to the amplifiers, it is a special feeling, which only playing heavy metal can give you – that adrenaline. We all identified with that. We really feel like a band when we are on stage, electrified. That name sounded powerful to us, in style and fit into the concept of the cover, which is all about lightning and electricity, guitars, amplifiers and speakers. And women who provoke with sharpness and rebellion. We wanted to clearly show that we are a metal/rock band. And finally, Nikola Tesla was Serbian, and we are a band from Serbia. Another symbolic connection between electricity and us, who are dependent on “electric” music. - What was the first song written for “Electrified” and did it set the tone for the rest of the album?
“Like a Fire” was created in 2019. The demo for “Better Than Hell” was created back in 2006. These are old ideas and demos, which I used for this album. The song “Dare to Dream” was created in 2020 and was actually supposed to be on the first album, but we put it aside then. - Did you face any creative challenges or unexpected moments during the recording process that led to something unique on the album?
This time we experimented a bit more, but we didn’t stray far from hit, melodic and memorable choruses. Now we’re a little more metal. A song like “They Defied” goes into some somewhat experimental spheres. Many singled out the progressive metal part at the very end of the song, which was inspired by Balkan ethno music. - Were there any songs on the album that underwent significant changes from the initial idea to the final version? If so, can you share an example?
Yes, of course! I have already mentioned some of the songs. “Like a Fire” was already recorded earlier for the band “AlogiA”. We significantly improved the production, added progressive metal parts, keytar solos and composed vocal harmonies for 2 vocalists. “Better Than Hell”, “Coming Along” – all those songs sounded different in their first forms. Everything has been adapted to the vocals for 2 women, the lyrics have been slightly changed. It’s a normal thing to adapt some old demos to an idea and set up a new band. - You’ve worked with Alessandro Del Vecchio in the past, and now Nikola has stepped in on bass. How has this transition influenced the band’s chemistry?
No one expected Alessandro’s withdrawal, it caught us by surprise and we had to react quickly. Nikola Mijic is a phenomenal singer, many know him from the groups Eden’s Curse, Alogia, Serious Black. He is also a sound engineer. He also worked for “The Big Deal” as a sound engineer. He helps the band a lot from the very beginning, he knows all of us, he travelled with us, so he knows all the members very well. He helped a lot with the production and it was logical for him to take the place of the bass player on the album, which does not mean that he will play live. - Looking back at “First Bite” and now at “Electrified”, how do you feel you’ve grown as musicians and as a band overall?
I love both albums, but I think “Electrified” is far more mature. It’s more metal, the production is much better. The playing is much more interesting and better. Everything sounds much more mature. Every segment – from singing, to playing. - The music industry is ever-changing. How do you see the role of bands like yours in keeping melodic rock relevant to new generations of listeners?
It’s not easy at all. You have to be very true, in order to attract the attention of an audience that is no longer so large and reduced to only the most sincere fans. On the other hand, Spotify and other platforms have completely devalued CDs and vinyl. I think the human factor is what we count on. As many live gigs as possible, because I think it still makes a difference when a human being stands in front of you with the energy he carries. - The pandemic reshaped the way bands connect with their audience. Do you see yourselves embracing more virtual or innovative formats alongside live performances?
Why not? We are open to all forms of communication. I think that even on the Internet you can feel the real energy of some people and who is really worth it and who is fake. - If you could put together your dream lineup for a festival, who would you want to share the stage with, and why?
They would probably be some of the most legendary metal/rock bands. Like for example Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Dream Theater, Nightwish & The Big Deal in the same place. That would be great! - Thank you for your time, is there anything you would like to say to your fans or Heavyworlds readers?

È fantastico avere persone come loro sull’album. Sono un grande fan delle band da cui provengono, “Treat” e “H.E.A.T.”. In generale, penso che la scena rock svedese sia attualmente la più forte al mondo. Anders ha scritto e composto la canzone “Survivor”, e Jona ha scritto “Don’t Talk About Love” insieme ad Alessandro Del Vecchio. - Cosa ha ispirato la scelta del titolo “Electrified” per l’album? Riflette un’idea o un’atmosfera centrale del disco?
È stata una mia proposta alla fine, quando tutto era ormai pronto. A tutti nella band piaceva molto la canzone “Like a Fire”. Il testo parla di una band metal che inizia a esibirsi sul palco. Descrive la sensazione che proviamo tutti quando colleghiamo gli strumenti e l’adrenalina inizia a bruciare come un fuoco. Quando siamo sul palco, connessi agli amplificatori, è una sensazione speciale che solo suonare heavy metal può dare: quella scarica di adrenalina. Ci identifichiamo completamente in questo. Ci sentiamo davvero una band quando siamo sul palco, “elettrizzati”. Quel nome ci sembrava potente, stilisticamente adatto e in linea con il concetto della copertina, che parla di fulmini, elettricità, chitarre, amplificatori e altoparlanti. E anche di donne che provocano con grinta e ribellione. Volevamo mostrare chiaramente che siamo una band metal/rock. Infine, Nikola Tesla era serbo, e noi siamo una band serba. Un altro legame simbolico tra l’elettricità e noi, che dipendiamo dalla musica “elettrica”. - Qual è stata la prima canzone scritta per “Electrified” e ha impostato il tono per il resto dell’album?
“Like a Fire” è stata creata nel 2019. Il demo di “Better Than Hell” risale addirittura al 2006. Si tratta di vecchie idee e demo che ho utilizzato per questo album. La canzone “Dare to Dream” è stata creata nel 2020 e in realtà doveva essere inclusa nel primo album, ma l’abbiamo accantonata allora. - Avete affrontato sfide creative o momenti inaspettati durante la registrazione che hanno portato a qualcosa di unico nell’album?
Questa volta abbiamo sperimentato un po’ di più, ma non ci siamo allontanati troppo da ritornelli orecchiabili, melodici e memorabili. Ora siamo un po’ più metal. Una canzone come “They Defied” entra in sfere leggermente sperimentali. Molti hanno notato la parte di metal progressivo alla fine della canzone, ispirata alla musica etnica balcanica. - Ci sono state canzoni nell’album che hanno subito cambiamenti significativi dall’idea iniziale alla versione finale? Puoi fare un esempio?
Sì, certo! Ho già menzionato alcune canzoni. “Like a Fire” era già stata registrata in precedenza per la band “AlogiA”. Abbiamo migliorato significativamente la produzione, aggiunto parti di metal progressivo, assoli di keytar e composto armonie vocali per due vocalist. “Better Than Hell”, “Coming Along” – tutte queste canzoni suonavano diverse nelle loro prime versioni. Tutto è stato adattato per i due vocalist femminili, e i testi sono stati leggermente modificati. È normale adattare vecchi demo a una nuova idea e creare una nuova band. - Hai lavorato con Alessandro Del Vecchio in passato, e ora Nikola è subentrato al basso. Come ha influenzato questa transizione la chimica della band?
Nessuno si aspettava l’uscita di Alessandro, ci ha colti di sorpresa e abbiamo dovuto reagire rapidamente. Nikola Mijic è un cantante fenomenale, molti lo conoscono dai gruppi Eden’s Curse, Alogia, Serious Black. È anche un ingegnere del suono. Ha lavorato per “The Big Deal” come ingegnere del suono. Ci aiuta molto fin dall’inizio, conosce tutti noi, ha viaggiato con noi e conosce bene tutti i membri. Ha contribuito molto alla produzione ed è stato logico per lui prendere il posto di bassista nell’album, anche se questo non significa che suonerà dal vivo. - Guardando a “First Bite” e ora a “Electrified”, come pensi siate cresciuti come musicisti e come band?
Amo entrambi gli album, ma penso che “Electrified” sia molto più maturo. È più metal, la produzione è molto migliore. Il livello di esecuzione è molto più interessante e migliorato. Tutto suona molto più maturo, dal canto alla strumentazione. - L’industria musicale è in costante evoluzione. Come vedi il ruolo di band come la vostra nel mantenere vivo il rock melodico per le nuove generazioni?
Non è affatto facile. Devi essere molto autentico per attirare l’attenzione di un pubblico che ormai è ridotto ai fan più sinceri. D’altra parte, Spotify e altre piattaforme hanno completamente svalutato i CD e i vinili. Penso che il fattore umano sia ciò su cui contiamo. Fare il maggior numero possibile di concerti dal vivo, perché penso che faccia ancora la differenza quando un essere umano si presenta davanti a te con l’energia che trasmette. - La pandemia ha ridefinito il modo in cui le band si connettono con il pubblico. Pensate di abbracciare più formati virtuali o innovativi insieme alle performance dal vivo?
Perché no? Siamo aperti a tutte le forme di comunicazione. Penso che anche su Internet si possa percepire la vera energia di alcune persone e capire chi vale davvero e chi è falso. - Se poteste mettere insieme la lineup dei vostri sogni per un festival, con chi vorreste condividere il palco e perché?
Probabilmente sarebbero alcune delle band metal/rock più leggendarie. Ad esempio Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Dream Theater, Nightwish e The Big Deal nello stesso posto. Sarebbe fantastico! - Grazie per il vostro tempo, c’è qualcosa che vorreste dire ai vostri fan o ai lettori di Heavyworlds?
