Noi di Heavyworld.com abbiamo avuto occasione di scambiare due chiacchiere mesi fa con i Rainover. Per motivi tecnici, l’intervista è andata persa e siamo riusciti a recuperarla solo ora, ecco ciò che ne esce fuori dalla nostra chiacchierata con i ragazzi.
– Ciao e benvenuti su Heavyworlds.com, è un piacere avervi qui con noi. Come state ragazzi?
Ciao a te Pinka e a tutti gli altri di Heavyworlds! Stiamo veramente bene, è un piacere rispondere alla vostra intervista.
– Cosa mi puoi dire della vostra storia? Come vi siete incontrati e come è nata la band?
La band è nata nel 2003 nella nostra città natale, Murcia, quando Anthon Lo (chitarre), Arturo Hernández (tastiere) e la cantante precedente si son riuniti inizialmente con lo scopo di creare una band dal tipico sound Gothic Metal di fine anni ’90. Noi ci conoscevamo suonando in altre band e questo è anche il mondo in cui, un po’ di tempo dopo, abbiamo trovato il batterista Quini Pelegrin, che era molto attivo nella scena doom metal della città e aveva fatto parte con Anthon di una band black metal un paio di anni prima. Nel 2009, abbiamo incontrato il nuovo bassista Antonio Perea, che si occupa anche delle linee vocali, già noto in diverse formazioni doom metal.
In questi primi momenti della band, abbiamo suonato in un buon numero di live, girato due videoclip e registrato il nostro primo album. Questa è la storia della band fino al 2011, quando abbiamo deciso di separarci dalla nostra vecchia cantante, dare un nuovo nome alla band e prendere Andrea Casanova alla voce per registrare il nostro nuovissimo album “Transcending The Blue And Drifiting Into Rebirth”.
– Cosa mi dici del nome? All’inizio era “Remembrances”. Perchè avete scelto di cambiarlo in “Rainover”?
L’abbiamo praticamente scelto per evitare qualsiasi problema legale. Siamo veramente contenti a sufficienza del cambio, non solo perchè suona meglio, ma anche perchè è un modo di identificare noi stessi per come siamo ora al 100%, e pensiamo che si adatti al nostro sound e alla nostra personalità come gruppo. L’abbiamo preso dalla canzone “Rain Over My Tears” del nuovo album ed è un nome che richiama le atmosfere piovose. La pioggia è un elemento naturale che ha un ciclo e cade giù solo per ritornare di nuovo al cielo.
Una sorta di rinascita, qualcosa assimilabile ad un motto personale per chi scrive i testi nella band, e che ha anche un significato sia al loro interno che anche nella storia della band, dopo la nostra rottura nel 2011.
– Parliamo dell’album che avete rilasciato di recente. C’è qualche concept dietro “Transcending The Blue And Drifting Into Rebirth”?
Sicuramente non si tratta di un concept album, c’è una sorta di tematica che giace dietro le canzoni, che hanno bene o male tutte lo stesso significato: i cicli nella vita, ed esattamente come tutto nella vita è ciclico e ogni fine, ogni caduta può essere un nuovo inizio, anche alla fine del più lungo percorso blu, tu puoi trovare una luce, un nuovo inizio. Anche questo è legato al nome della band, come abbiamo spiegato nella risposta precedente, ed è perfettamente evidenziato nella cover dell’album (disegnata dal grande artista Mario Sánchez Nevado, “Aégis”) e nel titolo. Tutto è volto a rispecchiare questo concetto.
A livello di testi, molte canzoni trattano di questi argomenti direttamente ed in un’ottica un pò più esistenzialista, mentre molte altre trattano più di sentimenti personali o anche temi concreti della società di oggi o della vita di tutti i giorni. Ogni canzone è stata creata come un pezzo a sè e in verità son state scritte da due diverse persone (Quini e Andrea) separatamente, ma è uscito fuori che questa è un’idea che è presente nei pensieri di entrambi e per questo si è rispecchiato nei testi. Hanno scoperto la coincidenza mentre lavoravano nel sistemare i testi, quindi tutto ha avuto senso e li ha direzionati a creare e completare il concept del disco. Musicalmente, questo si riflette anche nella varietà delle melodie, come anche la vita è anche varia e composta da diversi momenti e sentimenti.
– Ogni canzone dell’album mi ricorda un corpo d’acqua calmo e pulito. L’acqua ha qualche significato importante per voi?
Questa è Andrea che ti risponde personalmente, e ti dico che è veramente interessante quello che hai detto! Facciamo molte connessioni ma è curioso che tu sia riuscita anche a sentirlo nel sound. Entrambi gli scrittori dei testi hanno un certo legame con il mare ed è una fonte di ispirazione per noi quando scriviamo. Lo stesso è accaduto- almeno per me- con la pioggia: mi fa sentire ispirata e molte volte uso le giornate piovose (che non sono molto comuni nella nostra zona) per stare a casa e scrivere. E’ un elemento naturale che mi fa sentire legata alla natura, al mondo intero e anche a me stessa in un modo introspettivo.
L’acqua è senza dubbio presente nelle canzoni, in gran parte in modo metaforico, ed è anche piazzato in alcuni titoli (“Rain over my tears”, “An ocean between us”) e anche in parti di altre lyrics (vedi per esempio “Remembrances”), per intendere diverse cose.
A livello di suono, credo ci siano certi tipi di musica che sono più adatti alle giornate piovose e nuovolose. Non so se alcuni troveranno questo nelle nostre canzoni, ma il fatto che ti abbiano fatto pensare all’acqua è un buon segno, quello che siamo riusciti a lasciare un segno dei nostri sentimenti e ispirazioni in esse (perciò grazie per l’osservazione!)
– A vostro parere, quale canzone di “Transcending The Blue And Drifting Into Rebirth” può essere considerata come la più rappresentativa dei Rainover?
Questo è veramente una domanda difficile a cui rispondere, perchè le canzoni nell’album sono molto varie. Prendi, per esempio, “Hopeless” e “H2SO4”. la prima è nel più classico e puro stile gothic metal mentre la seconda ha un ritmo positivo, melodico e linee vocali catchy e anche dei tocchi elettronici… questi sono probabilmente i due estremi del disco. Anche mantenendo una coerenza a livello di suono, ci piace giocare con le nostre influenze e siamo un po’ a doppia faccia in quel senso. Due canzoni che probabilmente raccolgono un po’ di tutto sono “oh, my cross!!” e “in free fall”, dato che hanno il potere, l’elettronica,le melodie e anche parti più calme e dark, con anche il primo featuring della voce maschile dura di Perea. “Cycles” è anche un canzone che possiamo evidenziare come una delle nostre migliori perchè, in un certo senso, comprende tutte le emozioni delle altre canzoni ed è super intenso e per questo è rappresentativo delle atmosfere che puoi trovare nell’album , ma ancora di nuovo ha alcuni nuovi elementi, questa volta in forma di cantante guest maschile (Luca Starita)! Perciò, come vedi, questa domanda è difficile da rispondere.
– Potete raccontarci qualcosa su come funziona per voi il processo di scrittura e stesura dei brani?
Certo, nei primi passi della band, Arturo (tastierista) componeva la maggior parte delle melodie perciò l’album dei Remembrances ha la maggior parte delle musiche composte da lui. E’ ancora molto attivo ma “Transcending the blue and drifting into rebirth” ha dato il benvenuto anche alla composizione di altri membri band, e tutti erano generalmente più coinvolti, quindi tu hai canzoni scritte da diversi membri della band ma anche impegni di gruppo.
Proprio ora, con la nuova composizione in cantiere, è diventato molto più un lavoro di gruppo. Stiamo creando tanta più musica con la jam tra i 5 di noi nella sala prove o in piccoli gruppi. A volte qualcuno porta una nuova canzone e di tanto in tanto sono così adeguate al nostro stile che le teniamo esattaebte così come sono, con qualche cambiamento relativo agli stili personali dei membri. Ancora, altre volte le tagliamo al minimo e le ricostruiamo di nuovo e finiscono per essere completamente diverse.
Generalmente, ognuno si prende cura delle proprie parti, oltre che dare idee per la composizione generale della canzone, o anche per le parti degli altri. Ognuno può avere il suo input, prendiamo quello che ci sembra il migliore, e questo è come lo facciamo.
– Quali sono le vostre influenze e background musicali?
Le nostre influenze comuni si ritrovano nei tardi anni 90, principalmente, band gothic metal come Theatre of Tragedy, The Gathering, Within Temptation, Type O Negative, Moonspell, Tristania, Paradise Lost, Anathema e altri.
Altre importanti influenze includono, invece, il doom, black e death metal, e in verità molti membri della band hanno suonato in formazioni di questi stili anni fa, alcuni delle quali hanno anche sfornato lavori e avuto intense attività live.
Progressive rock, symphonic metal, altri stili di metal moderno, classica e diversi rami di musica popolare sono anche ascoltati da diversi membri della band. La musica è ampia e così anche le nostre influenze!
– State pianificando qualche tour? C’è qualche paese in cui vi piacerebbe suonare?
Abbiamo suonato in giro un po’ negli ultimi mesi, dato che l’album è uscito a febbraio, iniziando dal suo release show lo scorso aprile, ma speriamo che ci sia molto altro in futuro. La scena è un po’ viziata/rovinata, in tutta onestà, non è come era qualche anno fa, con più show e migliori condizioni per le band, ma ancora lavoriamo per farlo avvenire.
Ci piacerebbe visitare qualsiasi paese nel mondo, soprattutto dove la nostra musica sembra essere più apprezzata. Alcuni di questi paesi sono il Regno Unito, Paesi Bassi, Italia, Francia, Germania, Russia e poi anche oltre oceano, Canada e altri punti degli USA. Abbiamo un interessante responso anche dal Giappone. Non c’è un posto da questi dove non ci piacerebbe suonare! E siamo anche felici di annunciare la nostra prima entrata nella scena internazionale live: sarà al Roadhouse in Birmingham, Uk, per il Festival Quinphonic il 5 aprile. E’ un festival speciale dove parteciperanno 5 band e saranno headliners e suoneranno concerti interi a uguali condizioni. Non vediamo l’ora di suonare lì e anche di annunciare altre date internazionali, sperando al più presto!
– Ho saputo che avete registrato il vostro ultimo lavoro a Prato (Italia). Vi siete goduti il tempo in Italia e come?
E’ giusto. E’ stata davvero un’esperienza! Dopo tutto, è stato un periodo di lavoro intenso e anche di convivenza per la prima volta. Abbiamo condiviso un appartamento per 21 giorni e questo è stata abbastanza complicato. Abbiamo passato praticamente tutto il tempo in studio, lavorando alle canzoni per molte ore al giorno, abbiamo anche avuto un paio di giorni liberi che abbiamo usato per scoprire la bellissima Firenze, che era abbastanza vicina al nostro luogo di lavoro.
Le registrazioni erano abbastanza tranquille, nonostante per alcune cose ci sia servito un po’ più di tempo o erano un po’ più difficili di quello che ci aspettavamo, ma alla fine siamo riusciti a fare tutto nei tempi prestabiliti. Abbiamo avuto i nostri alti e bassi, abbiamo riso un po’, eravamo esausti, a volte anche malati ; abbiamo mangiato tanta pasta, bevuto un po’ di birra e imparato un po’ di modi di dire italiani, haha. Alla fine, una esperienza da ricordare!
– Immaginate di dover scappare su un’isola deserta. Puoi portare con te solo 5 cose. Quali sarebbero?
Ok, faremo uno per uno e vediamo cosa ognuno di noi si vorrà portare:
Arturo: un pianoforte, una donna, un lettore per ascoltare le registrazioni di un terror radio show che ascolto, un flauto, e da bere.
Anthon: una bussola, un coltello, un desalinatore per l’acqua marina, un telefono satellitare e un kit di pronto soccorso.
Andrea: un enorme contenitore di crema solare, un letto impermeabile, un dispositivo da cui ascoltare la musica con un ricaricatore solare incorporato, un ricordo personale di famiglia, e un completo kit di sopravvivenza con tutto quello che serve per resistere su un’isola (si ho barato).
Perea: mio figlio, la mia ragazza, la salute, la felicità e una bottiglia magica con tre desideri, dove il terzo sarà avere altri tre desideri.
Quini; birra, un manuale di sopravvivenza, un kit di pronto soccorso, il mio album di foto e una chitarra.
– E’ tutto per ora, grazie del vostro tempo. C’è qualcosa che vorreste dire ai vostri fans e/o lettori di Heavyworlds.com?
Certo! – Hi there and welcome on Heavyworlds.com! We’re glad to have you here with us. How are you guys?
Hello there, Pinka and everybody else in Heavyworlds! We are very nice, glad to be answering your interview!
– What about your story? How did you meet and in which way did you decide to get together as a band?
The band started in 2003 in our hometown, Murcia, when Anthon Lo (guitars), Arturo Hernández (keyboards) and the previous singer firstly joined in the aim to create a band in the vein of the late 90’s gothic metal bands. We kind of knew each other from playing in other bands, and this is also how, some time later, we found drummer Quini Pelegrín, who
was very active in the doom metal scene of the city and had been together with Anthon in a
black metal band a couple of years before. In 2009, we had a new bassist in Antonio Perea,
who also lends the vocals he’s been known for in different doom metal formations.
In these first stages of the band, we played a good number of shows, shot two videoclips
and recorded our first album. That’s the history of the band until 2011, when we decided to
part ways with our old singer, get a new name for the band, and welcome Andrea Casanova
on vocals to record our newest album, “Transcending The Blue And Drifting Into Rebirth”.
– What about the name? It first was “Remembrances”. Why did you choose to change
it to “Rainover”?
We basically changed it just to avoid any kind of legal problems. We’re actually pretty glad
with the change, not only because it sounds better, but also because it’s a way to identify
ourselves as what we are now 100%, and we think it fits our sound and personality as a
band. We got it from the song “Rain over my tears” off the new album, and it’s a name that
resembles rainy atmospheres. Rain is a natural element that has a cycle and falls down only
to ascend again. A kind of a rebirth, something that is a bit of a personal motto for the lyric
writers in the band and has therefore a significance in the lyrics, and also in the history of
the band, after our “makeover” in 2011.
– Let’s get to the album you recently released. Is there any concept
behind “Transcending The Blue And Drifting Into Rebirth”?
While the album is not a conceptual album, there is a certain theme underlying its songs
and its overall meaning: the cycles in life, and how everything in life is cyclic and every
end, every fall, can be a new beginning, and even at the end of the longest blue path you
can find a light, a new start. This is also related to the band name, as explained in the
previous answer, and it’s perfectly depicted by the album cover (created by the great artist
Mario Sánchez Nevado, “Aégis”) and the title. It all comes to reflect this concept.
Lyrically, some of the songs treat these topics directly and go a bit in a more existentialist
fashion, whereas some others deal with more personal feelings or even concrete themes of
today’s society or everyday life. Each song was created as a separated piece, and in fact
they were written by two different people (Quini and Andrea) separately, but it turns out
that this is an idea that is present in the thoughts of both of them and therefore got reflected
in their lyrics. They found the coincidence as they worked in giving the lyrics the final
touch, so everything made sense and directed them to create and complete the concept of
the album. Musically, this gets reflected as well in the variety of the tunes, just like life is as
well varied and compounded of different moments and feelings.
– Every song of the album reminds me of a calm and clear body of water. Has water
any important meaning to you?
This is Andrea answering this question personally, and I’ll say that it’s very interesting that
you said that! We do make some connections, but it’s curious that you can hear it as well in
the sound.
Both lyrics writers happen to have a certain bond with the sea, and it’s a source of
inspiration for us when writing. The same happens -at least to me- with rain: it makes me
feel inspired, and many times I use the rainy days (which are not that common in our area)
to stay home and write. It’s a natural element that makes me feel tied with nature, with the
world as a whole and also with my own self in an introspective way.
Water is undoubtedly present in the songs, mostly in a metaphorical way, and it’s even
placed in some titles (“Rain over my tears”, “An ocean between us”), and at the parts of
other lyrics (see, for instance, “Remembrances”), to mean different things. Sonically, I
guess there are certain types of music that are more fitting to the rainy and cloudy days. I
don’t know if some might find this in our songs, but the fact that they make you think of
water is a good sign that we got to leave an imprint of our feelings and inspirations in them
(so thank you for the remark!).
– In your opinion, which song of “Transcending the blue and drifting into rebirth”
can be considered the most representative of Rainover?
That’s a very hard to answer question, because the songs in the album are very varied.
Take, for example, “Hopeless” and “H2SO4”. The first one is in the most classical and
pure gothic metal style whilst the second has a very upbeat rhythm, melodic and catchy
vocal lines and even electronic touches… these are probably at the two extremes of the
album. Even keeping a sonic coherence, we like to play with our influences, and we are
a bit double-faced in that sense. Two songs that probably gather a bit of it all are “Oh,
My Cross!!” and “In Free Fall”, since they got the power, the electronics, the melodies,
and also quieter and darker parts, with the first also featuring Perea’s harsh male vocals.
“Cycles” is also one song we could highlight as one of the best ones, because, in a way,
it comprises all the emotions of the other songs and it’s super intense, and for that it’s
representative of the ambiances you can find in the album -but yet again it has some new
elements, this time in the form of a male guest singer (Luca Starita)! So, as you see, this
question is a difficult one to answer!
– Could you tell us something about how the writing process works for you?
Sure. In the first stages of the band, Arturo (keyboards), used to compose the majority
of the tunes, so the Remembrances album had most of the tunes composed by him. He’s
still very active, but “Transcending the blue and drifting into rebirth” also welcomed the
composing of other band members, and everybody was generally more involved, so you
have songs by different band members and also group efforts.
Right now, with the new compositions underway, it’s becoming a lot more of a team work.
We are creating a lot more music in a “live” way between the five of us at the rehearsal
room, or in smaller groups. Sometimes someone brings in a new song, and occasionally
they are so adequate to our style that we keep them almost like they are, with few changes
aside from the natural stylistic adaptations of each player. Yet, other times we strip them
down and build them up again so that they end up being completely different songs.
Generally, everyone takes care of their own parts, besides giving ideas for the general
composition of the song, or even for each other’s parts. Everyone can have their input, we
keep what feels best, and that’s how we make it!
– What are your influences and your musical backgrounds?
We found our common ground in the late 90’s –mainly- gothic metal bands, like Theatre
of Tragedy, The Gathering, Within Temptation, Type O Negative, Moonspell, Tristania,
Paradise Lost, Anathema, and so on.
Other important influences include doom, black, and death metal, and in fact several
members of the band played in formations of these styles years ago, some of which even
put out releases and had an intense live activity. Progressive rock, symphonic metal, other
styles of modern metal, classical and different branches of popular music are also listened
by different members of the band. Music is wide and so are our influences!
– Are you planning some kind of tour? Is there a country where you’d like to play?
We’ve been playing around a bit for the past few months, since the album came out in
February, starting by the album release show last April, but we hope there’s a lot more to
come. The scene is a bit spoilt, in all honesty –it’s not like it used to be some years back,
with more shows and better conditions for the bands, but still we work to make it happen.
We’d love to visit just about any place in the world, especially where our music seems to
be best received. Some of these areas are the UK, The Netherlands, Italy, France, Germany,
Russia, and then at the other side of the ocean, Canada and different spots in the USA.
We also got some interesting response from Japan. There is no place from these where we
wouldn’t like to play!
And we’re very happy to announce our first incursion in the international live scene: it’ll be
at the Roadhouse in Birmingham, UK, for the Quinphonic Festival in April 5th
is a special festival where all five bands taking part in it will be headliners and play full
shows in equal conditions. We can’t wait to play there, and also to announce some more
international dates –hopefully soon!
– I heard you guys have recorded this last work in Prato (Italy). Did you enjoy your
time here in Italy and how?
That’s right! It was quite an experience.
Over all it was a time of working intensely and also living together for the first time. We
shared a flat for 21 days and that was pretty intense. We basically spent all the time in the
studio, working on the songs for many hours a day, yet we also had a couple of days off we
took to discover the beautiful Firenze, which was close enough to our working spot.
The recordings were quite smooth, although some things took a bit more time or were a
little more difficult than expected, but in the end we managed to do it all on time. We had
our ups and downs, we laughed a lot, we were exhausted and sick at some moments as
well; we ate a lot of pasta, had some beer, and learned a bit the Italian ways too, haha. All
in all, an experience to remember!
– Imagine you had to run off to a desert island. You could only take 5 things with you.
What would they be?
Okay, we’ll go one by one and see what each one of us would take:
Arturo: a piano, a woman, a listening device with recorded programs of a terror radio show
I listen to, and flute, and some drinking.
Anthon: a compass, a knife, a seawater desalinator, a satellite phone and a first aid pack.
Andrea: an enormous container of sunscreen, an impermeable bed, a device where I could
listen to music with a solar charger incorporated, a personal family item and a complete
survival kit with everything you’d need to survive in an island in it (yes, I cheated!).
Perea: my son, my girlfriend, health, happiness, and a magical bottle with three wishes,
where the third of them would be being granted three more wishes.
Quini: beer, a survival manual, a first aid kit, my photo album and a guitar.
