– Che ci dite della vostra storia? Come vi siete incontrati e in che modo avete deciso di mettere su la band?
Che dire, la storia dei Sanctorium inizia nell’estate del 2005, quando il chitarrista Victor e il batterista Andrew, che avevano già suonato insieme, hanno deciso di formare una nuova band. C’erano anche un bassista, un violinista e un tastierista con loro. Nel novembre 2005 sono stati raggiunti dalla cantante Daria (Eirene). Al contempo, avevamo scelto anche il nome della band. Da quel momento sono trascorsi molti eventi, e della formazione originaria è rimasta soltanto la cantante Daria. L’attuale line-up si è formata più o meno fra il 2010 e il 2011.
– Il nome “Sanctorium” ha qualche significato particolare? Viene dal Latino?
Il primo nome della band era “Astrae Sanctorium”. Ma dopo un pò di tempo abbiamo deciso di abbreviarlo in “Sanctorium”. Si, viene dal Latino. Il significato particolare risiede nel fatto che la nostra musica è misteriosa, un pò occulta, perciò cercavamo un nome che riflettesse questo.
– Avete appena rilasciato il vostro album “The Depths Inside”. C’è un concept dietro l’album?
Si! In questo album abbiamo focalizzato l’accento sui testi. Sono una sorta di dipinti misteriosi e profondamente colorati, che possono nascere solo dalla mente di qualcuno. Volevamo che il nome fosse profondo e comprendesse questo. Alcuni dei nostri testi sono dedicati agli eroi delle storie di Lovecraft e al culto di Cthulhu. Da quel che sappiamo, era un antico Dio dei fondali marini, perciò era una ragione in più per la scelta del nome.
– E per quanto riguarda la cover? Rappresenta qualcosa di antico. Qual è il significato?
Dopo un consulto con il nostro disegnatore, lui ci ha proposto alcune varianti della cover e noi abbiamo capito che questa era la migliore! La nostra concezione è rivelata in questa cover! La profondità dei fondali, le statue antiche di una città antica, probabilmente Atlantide -chissà? Mistica, mitologica, occulta- di cui nessuno sa dove si trovano e chi rappresentano.
La cover mostra che all’interno della profondità ci sono numerose sorprese ed enigmi che non sono ancora stati risolti.
– Quale brano di “The Depths Inside” può essere considerato il più rappresentativo dei Sanctorium?
Ohhh, è una domanda difficile! La nostra più vecchia è “Prayer”, che suoniamo dal 2006. Ma la più rappresentativa… Non lo so, nella mia modesta opinione ce ne sono diverse, non una!
– Potete dirci qualcosa riguardo come funziona il processo di composizione per voi?
Che dire, riguardo la composizione di TDI, è stata abbastanza difficile, perchè all’ultimo momento abbiamo deciso di includere il coro e il violino negli arrangiamenti, ed anche numerose voci di background. Ma non abbiamo diviso le tracce, abbiamo lavorato tutto durante le sessioni di registrazione. Immediatamente dopo questo, quando tutte le tracce erano registrate, abbiamo avuto poco tempo per imparare le note, ecco perchè la registrazione delle voci è stata abbastanza lunga. Ma il risultato ci dimostra che gli sforzi non sono stati vani!
– Quali sono le vostre influenze e background musicali?
Per quanto mi riguarda, adoro gli Epica, ma anche gli Xandria, i Draconian, gli Slumber, gli Shinedown.As for me, I dearly love Epica. Also Xandria, Draconian, Slumber, Shinedown, Qualcosa di epico come i Two Steps From Hell… mi piace Floor Jansen, ma anche Pink e Rihanna come cantanti. Per quanto riguarda le influenze musicali dei nostri compositori, so che uno è ispirato da Dream Theater e Blind Guardian, e l’altro dalla musica orientale, dal Progressive e dal Doom metal.
– State organizzando un tour? C’è un posto in cui vi piacerebbe suonare?
Si, stiamo organizzandoci, ma in questo momento c’è un pò di difficoltà nell’ottenere un passaporto per un membro. Ci piacerebbe suonare al MFVF in Belgio, è il nostro sogno! Mi piacerebbe anche la Svizzera, la Germania, l’Italia. In ogni caso, ci sono molti fan del Symphonic Metal anche in Messico, quindi sarebbe mozzafiato suonare anche lì!
– Con chi vi piacerebbe lavorare per una futura collaborazione o progetto?
Floor Jansen! E’ una dea del metal, ha una voce forte e versatile! O Kobi Farhi, la voce degli Orphaned Land. E come musicista…beh, forse Mark Jansen degli Epica =)
– Immaginate di dover scappare su un’isola deserta. Potete portare solo cinque cose con voi. Quali sarebbero?

– What about your story? How did you meet and in which way did you decide to get together as a band?
Well, history of Sanctorium began in the summer of 2005 when guitarist Victor and drummer Andrew, who had already played together, decided to form a new band. Also there were bassist, violinist and keyboardist with them. In November 2005 they were joined by vocalist Daria (Eirene). At the same time, the name of the band was finally selected.
Since that time a lot of events have passed, and from original line-up stayed only singer Darya. The current line-up has more or less formed only in 2010 or 2011.
– Does the name “Sanctorium” have some particular meaning? Does it come from Latin?
The first name of band was “Astrae Sanctorium”. But after a few time it was decided to shorten the name till “Sanctorium”. Yes, it’s came from Latin. The particular meaning is that fact that our music is enough mysterious, a little bit occult maybe, so we wanted a name that would reflect all this.
– You’ve just released your album “The Depths Inside”. Is there any concept behind?
Yes! In this album we made an accent on our texts. It’s some kind of mysterious and deep-colored paintings, which can be born only in a depths of somebody’s mind. We wanted this name to be deep and comprehensive. Some of our texts are devoted to the heroes of Lovecraft’s stories and cult of Cthulhu. As we know, it was an ancient underwater god, so it was an additional reason for this name.
– What about the artwork? It does represent something ancient. What’s its meaning?
After consultation with our designer he offered us a few variants of covers, and we understood that this one was the best one! Our conception is revealed in this cover! Deep underwater, ancient statues from some ancient town, maybe Atlántida – who knows? Mystic, mythological, occult – nobody knows where these statues were before and who they represent. The cover shows that the depths inside there are a lot of surprises and riddles that have not been solved until now.
– Which song of “The Depths Inside” can be considered as the most representative of Sanctorium?
Ohhh, it’s a hard question! Our oldest hit is “Prayer”, we are playing it since 2006. But most representative… Dunno, in my humble opinion there are a few songs, not one!
– Could you tell us something about how the writing process works for you?
Well, as for writing process for TDI, it was quite hard, because in last moment we decided to include choir and violin in arrangements, and also a lot of back-vocals. But we hadn’t parties for that, so all process of writing have been made during record sessions. Immediately after this, these parties were recorded, so we had only a few time to learn notes, that’s why a process of recording voices was enough long. But result shows us, that our efforts were not in vain!
– What are your music influences and also your musical backgrounds?
As for me, I dearly love Epica. Also Xandria, Draconian, Slumber, Shinedown, something epic like Two Steps From Hell… I like Floor Jansen, Pink, Rihanna as singers. About musical influences of our composers, I know that one was inspired by Dream Theater and Blind Guardian, and another one like oriental music, progressive and doom metal.
– Are you planning a tour? Is there any place where you would like to play?
Yes, we are planning, but in this moment there is some difficulty to obtain a passport from one member. We would like to play in a MFVF in Belgium, it’s our dream! Also I like Swiss, Germany, Italy. By the way, there are a lot of fans of symphonic metal in Mexico, so it must be breathtakingly to play also there!
– Who would you like to work with as a future collaboration for a song or new project?
Floor Jansen! It’s really a goddess of metal, such strong and versatile voice! Or Kobi Farhi, voice of Orphaned Land. As for musician… Well, maybe Mark Jansen from Epica =)
– Imagine you had to run off to a desert island. You could only take 5 things with you. What would they be?
Lighter, knife, rope, inflatable boat and my friend!))
