Durante questa rovente giornata di fine luglio, noi di HW abbiamo avuto il piacere di fare una chiacchierata con i Sonata Arctica, abituati al grande freddo finlandese ed in quest’occasione alle prese con le temperature africane della Capitale. Abbiamo incontrato prima Elias, Marko e Tommy; poco più tardi anche il frontman Tony Kakko, che avevamo già intervistato telefonicamente poco tempo fa (leggi qui l’intervista). Stavolta l’abbiamo incontrato di persona. Vediamo cosa ci hanno detto…
Ciao ragazzi, da HeavyWorlds! Come state?
Molto bene! Qui tutto ok, oggi ci siamo fatti una nuotata perché fa veramente caldo, mentre ieri siamo stati in giro per Roma per vedere un po’ la città…
Quali sono le sensazioni per il vostro concerto di stasera qui a Roma?
Il sound-check è stato molto positivo, speriamo di avere un sacco di gente stasera qui per noi. Non sappiamo ancora quanti biglietti sono stati venduti ma in Italia abbiamo sempre un pubblico scatenato!
Come sta andando questo grande tour?
Il tour vero e proprio arriverà a novembre, per ora stiamo suonando soprattutto nei festival… quindi aspettiamo per vedere come va
Ho ascoltato “Stones Grow Her Name” e l’ho trovato così vario …potrei dire che secondo me ogni canzone ha uno stile del tutto diverso dalle altre. Che mi dite a riguardo?
Ci sono diversi tipi di canzone, come nel precedente album. Questo è composto da qualche ballata e canzoni più heavy…tutte molto orecchiabili…pensiamo ci sia un buon equilibrio ed una sorta di nuovo sound.
In particolare “Cinderblox” è un pezzo “country-metal”! Molto interessante. Com’è nata l’idea?
Elias, Marko, Tommy: Tony è arrivato con questa canzone quando stavamo ancora decidendo cosa mettere nell’album. Il brano era valido e divertente. Era proprio Tony a dire: ”Ma no, questo è troppo per l’album!” e noi: “Invece nooo! Deve andare nell’album, è molto bella!”.
Tony: E’ iniziato tutto più per gioco, ho iniziato a suonare un po’ con un banjo e alla fine avevo una canzone. Ovviamente con questo strumento lo stile è molto sul bluegrass; aveva bisogno di un testo adatto e dunque avevamo pronto un pezzo country. Mi piace molto, è fantastico, mi fa sorridere ogni volta che lo ascolto e non manca mai dalla set list dei Sonata Arctica, lo suoniamo ogni volta!
Quale canzone sentite più vostra?
“Alone in heaven” e “Only the broken hearts” sono molto belle, ma pure “I’ve a right”… e “Cinderblox”!

Certo!
Lo stile della band è cambiato molto durante tutti questi anni. È mai stato influenzato da qualche altro gruppo?
Pensiamo che all’inizio sia stato influenzato da band come Stratovarius, ma anche Devin Townsend, Queen e musica folk finlandese o qualcosa del genere!
Che ne pensate dell’uso eccessivo dei suoni creati col computer invece di strumenti reali, durante il processo di produzione?
È tutto abbastanza finto. Noi non li usiamo così tanto, forse solo sintetizzatore e qualcos’altro per le orchestrazioni. Usiamo anche strumenti veri come banjo, violino….sicuramente questi suoni creati artificialmente sono sempre molto validi, ma pensiamo che sia una cosa positiva non farne un uso esteso.
I giochi olimpici sono appena iniziati…qual è la vostra disciplina preferita?
Non stiamo seguendo così tanto, comunque… mmm… tiro del giavellotto ed i 100 metri!
Vi piacerebbe essere tra gli artisti della prossima edizione del 70000 Tons Of Metal? Che pensate di questo festival?
Almeno l’ultima volta (2011) è stato grandioso, sarebbe bello andarci nuovamente, è stato così divertente! Eravamo 40 band, tutti così felici, bevendo birra, ridendo…che figata! Il prossimo anno potrebbe essere spassoso tornare.
Molti testi dei Sonata Arctica sono così belli, come ad esempio in “White Pearl Black Oceans”. Quand’è che ritieni una storia o un fatto meritevole di essere raccontato nelle vostre canzoni? Quali sono gli elementi che ti convincono?
Tony: Quando questa mi tocca in qualche modo, mi fa sentire qualcosa, se mi rallegra o rattrista, sarà una canzone che posso solo sognare e sperare faccia provare alle altre persone lo stesso che fa provare a me. Non so, ci sono molte persone e alcune di loro possono capire la canzone nella mia stessa maniera mentre altre no, ma rimane tutto così bello perché questa è la cosa principale nella musica: tutti possono adoperare le loro esperienze, chi sono… perché tutte le canzoni riflettono in maniera differente, quasi come uno specchio che mostra ogni persona da una prospettiva diversa; dunque queste canzoni possono essere come degli specchi. Non dico mai a nessuno esattamente per cosa sia stata scritta una canzone, perché ciascuno la vede giustamente a modo suo. Se alcuni pensano che una determinata canzone sia sulla guerra, potrebbe essere. Se qualcun altro invece pensa che sia sul tema della pace o altro, ha ragione pure lui.
Avete mai pensato ad una collaborazione artistica in particolare con un’altra band/cantante metal? Con chi vi piacerebbe lavorare?
Elias, Marko, Tommy: Steve Vai e… se volessimo registrare qualcosa sarebbe coi Metallica…sono grandiosi!
Tony: Con chi? Bene! Sarebbe carino lavorare ancora con Tarja (ex Nightwish). Sicuramente sarebbe anche molto bello cantare con qualcuno che sia wow, una grande rock star!
Ad esempio?
Come Steven Tyler! Ha ha! So che probabilmente da questo mix uscirebbe qualcosa di orribile, ma sarebbe fantastico! E poi…loro non sono cantanti ma con ciascuno dei Queen sarebbe un grande onore, avere la possibilità di lavorarci insieme! È così divertente incontrare ed imparare da gente nuova, ci sono un sacco di altri cantanti in giro, così bravi e professionali. Ogni volta che canti con altre band o cantanti è una situazione nuova, loro meravigliosi e fantastici e poi io! Ha ha! Sono aperto a tutte le idee possibili se hai qualche suggerimento, mi hanno già chiesto delle collaborazioni ma sfortunatamente in questo periodo non ho il tempo necessario…

Elias, Marko, Tommy: Ciao! Speriamo che il concerto vi piaccia, se non potrete esserci ci sarà un’altra data a Milano, durante il tour europeo vero e proprio! A presto!
Tony: Sono contento di essere tornato a Roma, dopo 12 anni, perché l’ultima volta è stata nel 2000, è fantastico essere qui ed anche a Milano sarà bello. Un po’troppo caldo per me, in questo periodo! Sono un tipo invernale, mi piace così tanto l’inverno, hehe!
Così ritornerai abbronzato però!

Very good! It’s being pretty good here, today we had a swim because it’s really hot and yesterday we had a really nice day in Rome, we went around for a sightseeing…
What are your sensations about your concert, tonight in Rome?
The sound check turned out really good, we are hoping to have a lot of people tonight. We still don’t know how many tickets have been sold, but in Italy we always have crazy audience.
How’s going on this great tour?
The big tour is coming in November, right now we are playing in festivals most of all. Let’s wait to see…
I’ve listened to “Stones grow her name” and I’ve found it so various, I mean … I could say there’s a different style for each song of the album. What can you tell us about it?
There are many kind of songs, like in the preceding album as well. This one is composed by few ballads and heavier songs…quite catchy songs. We think it’s a good balance in the album and a sort of a new sound.
“Cinderblox” in particular sounds like country metal! Very interesting song. How did the idea come out?
Elias, Marko, Tommy: Tony came up with this song, we were still deciding what to put on the album. The song was so good and funny. Tony was the guy saying: “No, this is too much for the album!” All the others said: “Nooo, this is gonna be on the album, it’s very good!”.
Tony: It started more as a joke, I started to play around with this banjo and I had a song. Of course when you have this banjo you believe the stuff can go on like bluegrass style; it needed the lyrics to go with and then we had a sort of a country song. I like it a lot, it’s fantastic, it makes me smile every time I hear it, it’s always on Sonata Arctica’s set list, we play it every time.
What’s the song you feel more yours?
“Alone in heaven” and “Only the broken hearts” are so good, also “I’ve a right”… and “Cinderblox” as well!

The band’s style has changed a lot during all these years. Did some other band influence it?
We think Stratovarius in the beginning, but also Devin Townsend, Queen and Finnish folk music too or something like that!
What do you think about the use of computer sounds instead of real instruments, during the production?
It’s quite fake. We don’t use it that much, just maybe synthesizer and something else for the orchestrations. We also use to have real instruments like banjo, violin… of course, you can use fake sounds and they sound pretty good, but I think it’s a positive thing if you don’t use it so much.
Olympic games have started…what’s your favourite Olympic sport?
We haven’t been following so much, but…mmm…javelin and 100mt!
Would Sonata Arctica like to be part of the 70000 Tons Of Metal’s bill next year? And what do you think about this festival?
At least last time (2011) was really super cool, it would be nice to go there again, it was a lot of fun! We were 40 different bands, everybody drinking happily beer, smiling…kind of crazy! Next year could be funny going again.
Many Sonata Arctica’s lyrics are so beautiful, like in “White Pearl Black Oceans” for example. When do you think a story deserves to be told in the lyrics of your music? What are the elements that convince you?
Tony: If it touches me somehow, makes me feel something, makes me happy or sad, a kind of song that I can only dream and hope that other people will feel the same I do. I don’t know, there are a lot of people and they can understand the songs in the way I do and also people who see in a different way, but it is all beautiful and this is the great thing about music: that everybody can apply their own experiences, them selves basically, what they are, all the songs reflect differently you know, a mirror shows every person in a different way and these songs can be like mirrors. I never tell anybody definitely what one song is about, because everybody is right, if some people think a song it’s about war, it can be. If someone else thinks it’s about peace or another thing, it’s alright anyway.
Have you ever thought about doing an artistic collaboration with another metal band/singer? With whom would you like to work?
Elias, Marko, Tommy: Steve Vai and…if we would like to record with somebody will be with Metallica…they’re huge!
Tony: Who?! Well! It would be cool doing something again with Tarja (ex Nightwish). Of course it would be great to sing with someone that is like wow, a huge big star!
Like whom?
Like Steven Tyler! Ha ha! I know we would probably mix and all would be a horrible thing, but it would be fantastic! And they’re not singers, but with anyone from Queen would be a great honour, to be able to work with them! It’s fun to meet and learn by new people and there are a lot of great professional singers out there. Every time you are singing together with other bands, or other singers, it’s a little bit a new situation, with a wonderful and fantastic singer and then just me! Ha ha! I’m open for any idea if you can suggest, I’ve been asked to collaborate with other bands, but unfortunately right now I don’t have time…
