[ENG] Fresh off the press, “Duél“, the fifth studio album by JINJER, has been released via Napalm Records on February 7, 2025. The Ukrainian band is widely known for their technical rhythms, their blend of ferocity and progressive elements, and the incredible vocal prowess of frontwoman Tatiana Shmayluk, who effortlessly shifts between clean singing and growls. This signature formula, long praised by both critics and metalheads worldwide, is once again on full display, this time with an added layer of aggression compared to their previous records.
For this album, JINJER once again collaborated with producer Max Morton, also responsible for mixing and mastering, who has been instrumental in shaping the band’s sound and helping cement their status as one of modern metal’s most outstanding acts.
Despite “Duél” being JINJER at their most brutal, featuring violent instrumentals and savage growls, the record still highlights Tatiana’s stunning clean vocals. The opening track, “Tantrum“, immediately showcases her extraordinary vocal range, setting the bar high for the entire album. The band’s signature style, balancing crushing breakdowns with melodic passages, remains a defining element of their sound, as evident in tracks like “Hedonist” and “Green Serpent“.
At times, JINJER’s fiercest side takes center stage, such as in “Rogue“, which drives forward with a relentless and almost anxiety-inducing intensity, or “Fast Draw“, a whirlwind of frantic death metal rhythms with stellar guitar work by Roman Ibramkhalilov, matched by the powerhouse performances of the bass and drums. “A Tongue So Sly” also leans into raw brutality, featuring formidable blast beats by drummer Vlad Ulasevich.
On the other hand, “Tumbleweed” slows things down but ends up feeling like the album’s weakest moment. “Kafka“, while relatively slow, begins with hauntingly beautiful clean vocals before plunging into a crushing, growl-laden climax. The intricate structures of “Dark Bile” almost recall the technical death metal brilliance of Atheist, while “Someone’s Daughter” is both complex and catchy, with clean vocals that dance over the instrumentation before bursting into an inevitable growling explosion.
The title track, “Duél“, encapsulates all the defining elements of JINJER’s best work: lightning-fast drumming, syncopated guitars, slapping bass, a brutal vocal delivery alongside softer moments, dynamic tempo changes, and even a touch of epic grandeur in the finale. A final, magnificent piece that seals an outstanding performance and reaffirms JINJER’s place as one of the most formidable bands in today’s global metal scene.
A band with a modern and inspired sound, “Duél” reflects not only JINJER’s technical and artistic prowess but also carries weighty themes, considering their home country and the ongoing war, giving their music a profound and urgent significance.
[ITA] Arriva freschissimo di stampa “Duél”, il quinto album in studio dei JINJER, rilasciato dalla Napalm Records in data 7 febbraio 2025. La band ucraina è nota ai più per i tecnicismi nelle ritmiche, lo stile impetuoso ma allo stesso tempo progressive e l’incredibile voce della singer Tatiana Shmayluk, che alterna voci pulite e growl. Questa formula, da sempre molto apprezzata sia dalla critica che dai metalheads di tutto il mondo, viene riproposta anche qui, ma con l’aggiunta di una maggiore aggressività rispetto ai dischi precedenti.
Anche per questo album i JINJER si avvalgono della collaborazione del produttore Max Morton (curatore anche del mixing e del mastering), il quale da anni accompagna la band nel proprio personale percorso creativo, contribuendo alla loro fama di esponenti di spicco del metal moderno.
Sebbene in Duél la band si presenti più brutale che mai, con parti strumentali violente e growl feroci, non mancano di certo i punti che mettono in risalto la bellissima voce pulita della frontwoman, come nel brano d’apertura “Tantrum”, che ne evidenzia subito le straordinarie doti canore. Tatiana Shmayluk dà sfoggio di tutte le sue grandi qualità di cantante metal, assestando la sua performance su livelli altissimi per tutta la durata del disco. L’alternanza fra parti aggressive corredate di breakdown micidiali e momenti prettamente melodici è una costante del sound dei JINJER, nonché un marchio di fabbrica facilmente riconoscibile (“Hedonist”, “Green Serpent”).
A volte predomina l’anima più feroce della band, come in “Rogue”, col suo incedere veloce e quasi ansiogeno (dove non si ha un attimo di respiro), oppure in “Fast Draw”, dai ritmi death metal forsennati (il lavoro di chitarra da parte di Roman Ibramkhalilov, al pari del basso e della batteria, è superlativo) e dalla prestazione vocale selvaggia. O ancora in “A Tongue So Sly”, dove il batterista Vlad Ulasevich assesta anche dei formidabili blast beat. “Tumbleweed” si adagia su ritmi più lenti, risultando l’unico episodio un pò più scialbo dell’intero disco. Anche “Kafka” è un pezzo relativamente lento, inizialmente accompagnato dalle belle clean vocals di Tatiana, ma conserva una pesantezza intrinseca che si manifesta in tutta la sua violenza nella parte finale in growl. Le trame articolate di “Dark Bile” quasi ricordano qualcosa degli Atheist, storici paladini del technical death metal di stampo americano. “Someone’s Daughter” è un brano molto articolato e dotato di potenza ed orecchiabilità, in cui la voce pulita pare danzare sugli strumenti sino all’immancabile esplosione in growl. La titletrack “Duél” possiede tutte le caratteristiche dei migliori brani targati JINJER: batteria fulminea, chitarre sincopate, basso slappato, voce brutale e parti vocali più dolci, rallentamenti e un pizzico di epicità sul finale.
Un’ultima magnifica traccia a suggello di una prestazione magistrale e di un album che riconferma i JINJER come uno dei gruppi più in forma dell’attuale scena metal mondiale.
Una band dal sound moderno, ispirata e, visto il paese di origine e il tema della guerra affrontato anche in questo album, con argomenti molto importanti di cui trattare.
