[ENG] Children of Bushido is Ryoji Shinomoto‘s first solo album of covers, a very deliberate homage to Children of Bodom. Shinomoto, who grew up in Hokkaido, Japan, felt a deep connection to the band from an early age. The album is a tribute to the late Alexi Laiho, with the release date coinciding with his 46th birthday, April 8, 2025. It blends melodic death metal with traditional Japanese music, resulting in a unique “Samurai Metal” sound. The project was born from a fan comment comparing Shinomoto’s style to “Children of Bushido”. This gave rise to his vision of fusing Japanese culture with Laiho’s musical legacy.
The album combines the ferocious energy of metal with the serenity of Japanese aesthetics, with nine tracks that explore the myth of the Japanese dragon god of the sea, creating an atmosphere that is entirely typical of its origins, thanks to particular instruments, such as the shamisen, erhu and taiko drums.
The metal guitar and vocals maintain the aggressive tone of the Bodom originals. All the songs are reinterpreted through this cultural lens. Personally I think this album has a great production, but I would also like to leave something more to those who read my review, that is an idea of what Ryoji’s sound is in a context of original songs and it is here that we notice a much calmer Power Metal compared to the rhythms of CoB, who are ultimately Power too, but with screaming vocals: “The Rainbow Song feat. [ITA] Children of Bushido è il primo album solista di cover di Ryoji Shinomoto, in omaggio fortemente voluto ai Children of Bodom. Shinomoto, cresciuto a Hokkaido, in Giappone, ha sentito un profondo legame con la band fin da piccolo. L’album è un omaggio al compianto Alexi Laiho, con la data di uscita che combacia col suo 46° compleanno, l’8 aprile 2025. Unisce il death metal melodico alla musica tradizionale giapponese, dando vita a un sound “Samurai Metal” unico. Il progetto è nato da un commento di un fan che paragonava lo stile di Shinomoto a “Children of Bushido“. Questo ha dato origine alla sua visione di fondere la cultura giapponese con l’eredità musicale di Laiho. L’album combina la feroce energia del metal con la serenità dell’estetica giapponese, con nove tracce che esplorano il mito del dio drago giapponese del mare, creando un’atmosfera del tutto tipica delle sue origini, grazie a strumenti particolari, quali shamisen, erhu e tamburi taiko. La chitarra metal e la voce mantengono il tono aggressivo degli originali dei Bodom. Tutti i brani vengono reinterpretate attraverso questa lente culturale. Personalmente penso che quest’album abbia un’ottima produzione, ma vorrei anche lasciare qualcosa in più a chi legge la mia recensione, ovvero un’idea di quello che è il sound di Ryoji in un contesto di brani originali ed è qui che notiamo un Power Metal molto più calmo rispetto alle ritmiche dei CoB, che sono alla fine Power pure loro, ma con voce screaming: “The Rainbow Song feat.
